History of the Collection
The Federal Depository Library Program was established in 1813 by Congress to make information by the three branches of the Federal Government available to the public. Designated in 1880, Omaha Public Library is the oldest depository library in Nebraska, and one of 14 serving as a depository library in the state.

Overview of the Collection
Omaha Public Library is a selective depository library which means it receives a selected portion of documents offered by the Government Printing Office (GPO). Print documents are housed on the 2nd floor of the W. Dale Clark Main Library. Many electronic documents are available online through the GPO's Federal Digital System. A portion of documents are cataloged and linked in the OPL Catalog to be checked out.
The collection contains approximately 508,000 federal documents including bound volumes, pamphlets, microfiche, topographic maps, DVDs, and videos. These documents are organized by their SuDoc Number, which means each document is identified by the department or agency.
