The Omaha Fire Dept. was organized in 1875 and began to hire professional firefighters. The only sources of water were cisterns. No city-wide water system until 1885 with the completion of the Florence waterworks.
The first electric street railway was completed in 1887. Street car lines were laid between Omaha and South Omaha.
1899 marked the year when Otto Bayesdorfer built a vehicle called the “Ottomobile”. He was the first of a dozen Omaha automakers. The Ottomobile weighed 265 pounds and reached speeds of 15 mph. It could not however climb Omaha’s steep hills.
